About Us

Purrs & Beans is New Zealand’s longest running cat café, located on 188 Hinemoa Street, Birkenhead, in the heart of the ‘village with a view’. We have been running since 2015; originally, we were BaristaCats Café at our flagship location in Auckland City before we rebranded in 2020.

We are a sanctuary to a clowder of very special resident rescue cats, many of whom are older and some with special needs. We pride ourselves in being an extremely high welfare cat café - prioritizing our cats’ comfort and happiness which in turn leads to a better visitor experience.

Consequently, all guests must be 10+ to enter our cat area as part of our SPCA welfare plan and it is a legal requirement for 10-14-year-olds to be booked in with a supervising adult. We do enforce this strictly to ensure the safety and welfare of our cats.

There is an entry fee to spend time with our fluffy gang. We are a small, independently run, social enterprise; we do rely on patronage to keep looking after our cats and keep the doors open. With limited capacity in each session so as not to overcrowd the cat area and overwhelm our cats, we strongly recommend booking online to guarantee your spot.

We also have foster cats on site who have come from Gutter Kitties and 9 Lives Orphanage; we care for them and help facilitate their adoptions when they are ready with 100% of the adoption fees going back to the rescue. You can learn more about our adoption process here.

With a full beverage menu on offer as well as snacks, you’ll also be able to enjoy a cuppa and a bite with your cat cuddles. Or if you’re short on time, you are more than welcome to just pop in for a takeaway coffee and say hi to the cats at the back before you go. Browse our menu here.

It is our goal to provide an enjoyable and enriching space for both humans and cats alike where we hope our guests not only have a purrific time but learn a little too. We believe we have created a tranquil space where our kitties can live their best lives and those in need of a bit of feline therapy can visit.
